„The Future is a Safe Place Hidden in My Braids” is an experimental film created by Mihaela Dragăn and composed of three videos with a duration of 6 minutes each. The video installation continues the ideas and principles of Roma Futurism, an artistic concept developed by the artist during her residency at the ParaSite art center in Hong Kong in 2018.
Roma Futurism refers to cultural aesthetics that explore elements of science fiction in Roma culture, intersecting Roma culture and history with advanced technology of the future and witchcraft. The entire Roma Futurism Manifesto can be read here.
The three parts:
☼ Enchantment for historical trauma
☼ The Anger that will heal me
☼ The Seed of the Witch
imagine new rituals and enchantments inspired by the practice of the witch Mihaela Mincă and her daughters, adapted and rewritten by Mihaela Drăgan in a futuristic visual scenario.
Mihaela Drăgan is interested in inventing a new ritual language that has the power to heal and empower Roma communities, so she updates the myths and old enchantments of Roma witches and combines them with the poetry of a modern anti-racist discourse, putting at the center of the narrative the figure of the Techno-Witch as leader of an utopian future in which the historical cycle of oppression against the Roma finally reaches an apocalyptic end.
The artist uses a series of historical references and Roman mythologies as starting points to investigate and compare the ritual dimension of artistic performance with the daily rituals performed by witches at work for their clients. At the same time, she is interested in a natural exchange between her artistic practice and the practices of Roma witches, so she collaborates with them as performers exploring the new futuristic rituals in her video, hoping that witches will approach and use them to heal their Roma clients.
Present throughout the video is the image of witches' long hair that is used not as a metaphor for femininity but as a metaphor for a utopian territory where Roma people are protected from oppression, a place where they can live happily and with dignity. The hair that is often used in the strongest spells of Roma women becomes a safe space to preserve the collective memory, as well as the expression of the struggle of Roma women who plant the seeds of the future for their entire community.
