\nni gabacha, eres mestiza, mulata, half-breed
\ncaught in the crossfire between camps
\nwhile carrying all five races on your back
\nnot knowing which side to turn to, run from;
\nTo live in the Borderlands means knowing
\nthat the india in you, betrayed for 500 years,
\nis no longer speaking to you,
\nthat mexicanas call you rajetas,
\nthat denying the Anglo inside you
\nis as bad as having denied the Indian or Black;
\nCuando vives en la frontera
\npeople walk through you, the wind steals your voice,
\nyou\u2019re a burra, buey, scapegoat,
\nforerunner of a new race,
\nhalf and half \u2014both woman and man, ne
ither\u2014a new gender;
\nTo live in the Borderlands means to\nput chile in the borscht,
\neat whole wheat tortillas,
\nspeak Tex-Mex with a Brooklyn accent;
\nbe stopped by la migra at the border checkpoints;
\nLiving in the Borderlands means you fight hard to
\nresist the gold elixir beckoning from the bottle,
\nthe pull of the gun barrel,
\nthe rope crushing the hollow of your throat;
\nIn the Borderlands
\nyou are the battleground
\nwhere the enemies are kin to each other;
\nyou are at home, a stranger,
\nthe border disputes have been settled
\nthe volley of shots have shattered the truce
\nyou are wounded, lost in action
\ndead, fighting back;
\nTo live in the Borderlands means
\nthe mill with the razor white teeth wants to shred off
\nyour olive-red skin, crush out the kernel, your heart
\npound you pinch you roll you out
\nsmelling like white bread but dead;
\nTo survive the Borderlands
\nyou must live sin fronteras
\nbe a crossroads.
